Five years after recording demos from 'Chalice', the quality I was looking for is finally acceptable and with essence of that vision still kept. The eternal anxiety over the inability to produce that vision I had back when I wrote the album in those two weeks during summer 2018 can finally subside, as it had haunted me every single day until release. A long time was spent trying to get bare essential equipment, trying to mix to my liking and also writing unassigned material of different ilk, as well as another album in 2020.

'Witch on the Moon' was the first full song written for this project and it was fueled by the melancholic depressive feeling of that period, I vividly remember it. While it is a self contained tale, it is related to the core story told over the first five tracks of this album and it is told as a legend, where the details are embellished and changed from how it really was.
Similarily 'Pawn King's Thoughts' even as an instrumental that deals with a separate character, is still connected to the whole of the album. It is about a recently ascended king, after his father's death and about the dark truth of how things really work.
From 'Descent' to 'On the Wings of Unknown' it follows the same character's story.
Originally meant to be named after the third track 'When the Moon Brings Light in Darkness', but as time went on, 'On the Wings of Unknown' became a much more relateable name for the project, especially as the final chapter to the core story.

This record while primarily focusing on atmosphere and feeling is in some ways more like progressive rock than traditional black metal. There are detail in the music and story to be found everywhere and no two tracks sound similar, in fact the tracks try not to linger too long on the same riff, but rather reference themselves musically to create a narrative.
It is still emotional listening to all these tracks, which is a great sign that I didn't waste my time, at least for myself.

Learning to mix over these five years, to get the exact feel I wanted was by far the hardest aspect, ironically writing is always the easiest.
One thing I want to improve more than the rest is consistent quality of the vocals. It might not seem like it, but I was grinding my chords to deliver a certain feel and narrative quality, it isn't there yet but I don't know if I can do better for this release. Whispering on those ancient demos only got the style across, not the quality or technique and I had to step it up.

Chalice EP has been privated to avoid having people find that first. The music should still be easily found for those with reasons, but besides the start it offered for my bandcamp page and an illustration of where this project started 5 years ago, it is ready to retire from my catalog, as it sadly isn't one of those great lofi cassette recorded demos that people in the past have produced, we are in an ugly digital age.

NONE a opéré un virage dans Where Life Should Be et ça se confirme davantage dans Damp Chill of Life. Le temps des métaphores est révolu : l'humidité froide, c'est celle des larmes qui coulent sur le visage à cause de la dépression. Tout pleure dans cet album : les guitares typées DSBM grésillent, les solos ("The Damp Chill of Life", "It's Painless To Let Go") sont liquides et coulent, les voix prennent à la gorge ; même le piano, étranglé par les sanglots ("Cease"), est aphone.
